Alain Xémard graduated from the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Lyon, France, with an engineering degree in electrical engineering in 1985.

He received a doctor from the Ecole Centrale de Lyon and he got the habilitation to supervise research (HDR) in 2011 from the University Blaise Pascal of Clermont Ferrand (France). 

He has been working at the Research Division of EDF since 1992. His research interests include insulation coordination, and development of tools for electromagnetic transient calculation.

He was convener of the IEC 28.04 in charge of the preparation of the IEC 60071.4 (Computational Guide to Insulation co-ordination and modelling of electrical networks) and is a member of the IPST steering committee (IPST is a conference dealing with electromagnetic transients).

He was convener of the CIGRE C4 301(Insulation coordination).

He is presently the French member of the CIGRE study committee C4 (System Technical Performances) and president of the French Normalisation Commission : AFNOR UF 28 (Insulation Coordination).

In 2016, he was awarded the CIGRE Technical Committee Award for his contribution to the work of the Study Committee C4 (System Technical Performance).
