Course Highlights 

The course is based on the usage of EMTP (www.emtp.com). All presentation are based on EMTP examples.

Training structure

The duration of the training is 3 days. 
The training starts at 8 am and ends at 5:30 pm every day.
The training is presented in English.

 

Computer and temporary EMTP license

The participants will be given access to EMTP software during the course and can also receive a trial licence for 15 days.

Day 1: July 15th

  2. Introduction to EMTP for simulation of power system transients.
  3. Fundamental models
  4. Multiphase and unbalanced load-flow solution in EMTP.
  5. Automatic steady-state initialization in EMTP.
  6. Basic switching transients
  7. Ferroresonance
  8. Transmission line/cable models: from basic to advanced wideband models
  9. Synchronous and asynchronous machines
  10. Nonlinear models: arresters, transformer magnetization
  11. Advanced simulation means in EMTP
  12. Simulation of complete systems, from small to very large-scale grids

Day 2: July 16th 

  1. Simulation and analysis of a practical 230 kV transmission system
  2. Switching transients, temporary overvoltages and electromechanical transients in networks with wind parks
  3. Simulation of IEEE-118 network benchmark
  4. Simulation of large-scale distribution networks, IEEE-8500 network
  5. Modeling of Distributed Generators
  6. Distributed generation control schemes and switching from grid-connected to islanding mode operation.
  7. Introduction to VSC based HVDC transmission system: basic operation, VSC-HVDC circuit topology, MMC (Modular Multilevel Converter) topology and controls (upper and lower levels).

Day 3: July 17th

  1. Exercises on basic MMC-HVDC operation in steady-state.
  2. Modeling of VSC-MMC based HVDC transmission in EMTP: different types of models and applications.
  3. Point-to-point HVDC transmission system simulation:
    1. Reference step change
    2. Study of AC faults
    3. Study of DC faults
    4. Start-up sequence
  4. Operation and modeling of multi-terminal DC grid:
    1. Control of DC grid and modeling considerations
    2. Simulation of 5 terminal DC grid
    3. Presentation of CIGRE B4-57 benchmark: 11 MMC stations and 2 DC/DC converters.
